This 7-hour tour begins with a scenic drive through quaint Hilo town, including a route along the historic waterfront. The journey continues to the old fishing village of Kalapana, which was destroyed by lava flows along with the adjacent Kaimu beach.
Your National Park Service certified guide offers detailed narration on the volcanology, geology, and history of Kilauea volcano. Learn about the various lava flows and the native flora and fauna encountered along the way. A highlight includes hiking across the lava flow to the new black sand beach formed after the destruction of the original coastline.
The tour also stops at the Star of the Sea Painted Church, a historic structure moved twice to protect it from advancing lava. This church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reflecting its cultural significance.
Next, visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the crown jewel of Hawaii. Explore key points such as the Kilauea Visitor’s Center, Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, and Steaming Bluffs. The tour includes a stop at the famous Volcano House, offering incredible views of the Kilauea Caldera. You will also hike to cracks and sinkholes in the paved roads caused by the historic 2018 eruption.
Dinner is included, rounding out a comprehensive volcano exploration experience.
