Only 27 minutes from Waikiki, nestled high above Honolulu, Tantalus Lookout provides an expansive view of the cityscape against a backdrop of lush mountains and glimmering oceans. The scenic drive up to the lookout is as enjoyable as the view itself, trekking through lush rainforest and offering glimpses of the island’s diverse flora. 3. Makapu’u Point
One of my favorites, Makapu’u Point, 32 minutes from Waikiki, situated at the southeastern tip of Oahu, is highly famed for its stunning coastal views and its iconic lighthouse. The Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail, a relatively easy hike, rewards visitors with panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged coastline. During sunset, the colors of the sky contrast sharply with the deepened blue of the ocean, creating a breathtaking display. The view from this point also includes neighboring islands like Moloka’i and Lanai, enhancing the panoramic experience. LOCAL TIP! During Whale Season you can see Whales from this lookout!
4. Diamond Head Crater
One of Oahu’s most famous landmarks, located only 12 minutes from Waikiki, Diamond Head Crater offers an unparalleled advantage point for viewing all of the island. The hike to the summit, though challenging, is definitely well worth the effort. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, and the vast Pacific Ocean. The sunset from Diamond Head provides an exceptional opportunity to watch the sun setting over the ocean, with the city lights beginning to flicker below. The combination of rugged volcanic terrain and the shimmering sea makes for a truly spectacular sight. Also, if you’re lucky and the day is clear, you may be able to see neighboring islands! And during whale seasons, it’s said that you will be able to see mama whales and their kin splashing in the ocean.
5. Kailua Beach
The Number 1 Beach in Hawaii 2019 goes to: Kailua Beach! 51 minutes from Waikiki, located on the windward side of the island is known for its powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters. However, it’s also a fantastic spot to catch the evening, or morning sunset, particularly from the beach’s western end. As the sun descends, the sky often lights up with a palette of warm colors that reflect off the water, creating a serene and picturesque scene. The gentle waves creating almost a white noise and the distant silhouette of the Mokulua Islands add to the charm of the sunset experience.
6. Lanikai Pillbox Hike
For those seeking both adventure and breathtaking views, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike is a must-do. Located around 49 minutes away from Waikiki, this relatively short but steep hike takes you to old military bunkers (pillboxes) perched on a ridge overlooking Lanikai Beach. The panoramic views from the top are spectacular, with the turquoise waters of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands in the distance. At sunrise/sunset, the colors of the sky are reflected in the water below, creating a stunning contrast with the lush green hills surrounding the area. Although the Lanikai Pillbox Hike is no secret, it’s best to go early in the morning so you’re the first to catch the gorgeous sunrise!
