Ah, yes! The world renowned Oahu. Where people fly in from all over the world to explore its stunning landscapes, divine beaches, and of course, the local culture! But one of the main things Oahu is known for is its snorkeling spots! Its clear waters and diverse marine life offer unforgettable underwater adventures. Here are some of the best snorkeling spots on the island, each offering its own unique experience.
1. Hanauma Bay
While one can argue it’s one of the most famous snorkeling spots on Oahu, Hanauma Bay is a protected marine embayment formed within a tuff ring. Located about 10 miles east of Honolulu in Hawaii Kai, this marine embayment is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and rich coral reefs. Visitors can expect to see a large variety of tropical fish that are only found specifically in Hawaii, this includes the Parrotfish, Butterflyfish, and the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a (I know it’s a mouthful!) The bay is also home to the Hawaiian green sea turtles, which can often be seen gliding gracefully through the water. One of my favorite parts about going down to Hanauma Bay as a local is that the fish there somehow know that you’re not allowed to touch them, so when you’re snorkeling, they get super close to you! Offering the full snorkeling experience!
Hanauma Bay is a protected area by the state, and due to its popularity, it gets crowded quickly. To ensure the preservation of its natural beauty, the bay limits the number of visitors and requires a reservation for entry. Additionally, there’s a small entrance fee ($25 for non-Hawaii residents and free admissions for Hawaii residents), but the experience is well worth it. Snorkelers should arrive early to avoid the crowds and get the best chance to explore the vibrant underwater world. Although, something to note, if you’re a tourist visiting Hanauma Bay for the first time, it is required to watch a video upon entrance to educate you on reef safety and how to preserve Hanauma Bay’s beauty. 2. Shark’s Cove
Located on the North Shore, Shark’s Cove is a must-visit for snorkeling enthusiasts. Despite its intimidating name, Shark’s Cove is named after its shark-like shape rather than the presence of sharks (thank goodness!) This rocky cove is part of the Pupukea Marine Life Conservation District and is celebrated for its diverse marine life and clear, shallow waters.
The cove features a series of rock pools and underwater channels teeming with marine creatures. Snorkelers can encounter colorful fish, sea urchins, and occasionally, the elusive octopus. The rocky landscape provides excellent opportunities for exploration and discovery. Due to its location, Shark’s Cove is less crowded than Hanauma Bay, offering a more serene, and personal snorkeling experience. But I would still recommend going early in the morning to beat the crowds and Hawaii’s crazy traffic! (59-711 Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa, Hawaii)
3. Kuilima Cove
For those seeking a more tranquil and less crowded snorkeling experience, Kuilima Cove in the Ko Olina Resort area is an ideal choice. This sheltered cove is located on Oahu’s western coast and is known for its calm, shallow waters, making it perfect for beginner snorkelers. The cove’s gentle waters are home to a variety of reef fish and sea life, including butterflyfish and damselfish. The sandy bottom and clear waters provide excellent visibility, allowing snorkelers to enjoy the underwater scenery without venturing too far from shore. Kuilima Cove also features amenities such as restrooms and picnic areas, making it a convenient choice for your keiki! (57-35 Kuilima Dr, Kahuku, HI 96731)
4. Ka’ena Point
For adventurous snorkelers willing to go off the beaten path, Ka’ena Point offers a rugged and remote snorkeling experience. Located at the westernmost tip of Oahu, Ka’ena Point is a natural reserve with dramatic cliffs and a rugged coastline.
The waters around Ka’ena Point are less frequented by tourists, providing a more isolated and pristine snorkeling environment. The area is known for its clear waters and the possibility of spotting large pelagic fish and marine mammals. However, snorkeling here requires a bit of a hike to reach the best spots, so it’s recommended for more experienced snorkelers prepared for a bit of adventure. (Farrington Hwy, Waialua, HI 96791)
5. Electric Beach
Electric Beach, located near the Waianae coast, earns its name from the nearby power plant that discharges warm water into the ocean. This warm water attracts a variety of marine life, including large schools of fish, rays, and occasionally, dolphins.
The snorkeling experience at Electric Beach can be quite dynamic, with strong currents and varying water conditions. However, the presence of abundant marine life makes it a rewarding destination for those who enjoy a bit of excitement. It’s best to check current conditions and, if possible, snorkel with a buddy or a guide. (Location: 92-201 Farrington Hwy, Kapolei, HI 96707)
