Oahu’s North Shore is famed for its stunning beaches, ono (delicious) food trucks, and laid-back local vibe. Known as the surf capital of the world, this stretch of coastline is a paradise for beach lovers, surfers, or if you’re just wanting to get a tan in. Whether you’re looking to catch a wave, relax under the sun, or explore tide pools, the North Shore has a beach that’s perfect for you. Here are some of the best beaches you shouldn’t miss during your visit.

Waimea Bay

Being the most renowned and iconic beach on the North Shore, Waimea bay is known for its massive waves during the winter months, drawing surfers in from around the globe. However, in the summer, the ocean calms down, making it an ideal place for swimming and snorkeling! The beach features a sandy, white shore and Instagram-worthy scenery, with towering cliffs surrounding the bay. Don’t miss the chance to jump off the famous rock ledge into the turquoise water, a bucket-list journey for most. The nearby Waimea Valley also offers beautiful botanical gardens and hiking trails, providing a jam-packed perfect day of adventure. (Location: 61-031 Kamehameha Hwy, Pupukea)

Sunset Beach

Though the name doesn’t lie, Sunset Beach is well known for its breathtaking sunsets. Making it a perfect place for romantic couples, family picnics, or even just a girls day at the beach! This expansive beach is also a favorite amongst surfers, especially during the winter months when the waves reach impressive heights. The beach is also perfect for long strolls, sunbathing, and as I mentioned before, picnicking. There are many picnic tables available along the beach, and you can often find food trucks serving up delicious local cuisine. In the summer, the calmer waters invite snorkelers and families, creating a more relaxed atmosphere. (Location: 59-104 Kamehameha Highway in Pupukea)

Banzai Pipeline (Ekuhai Beach)

Banzai Pipeline, often simply called “The Pipe,” is legendary among surfers for its powerful waves and perfectly formed barrels. This beach is a must-visit for any surf enthusiast, especially during the winter surf season. While it’s best suited for experienced surfers, spectators can enjoy the thrilling show from the shore. The beach is known for its picturesque backdrop, with vibrant green palm trees and rugged cliffs. Even if you’re not surfing, the energy of the beach and the skill of the surfers are captivating.
